Resilience, in simple terms, describes our capacity to recover from tough times. It involves facing setbacks head-on, adapting to change, and emerging stronger from difficult situations. As parents, nurturing resilience in our children is vital for their emotional well-being and growth.
When we talk about resilience, we’re referring to more than just bouncing back; it’s about thriving despite adversity. It’s the ability to navigate stress, trauma, or hardship while maintaining a sense of inner strength and well-being. Resilience isn’t something we’re born with; it’s a skill that can be developed and strengthened over time.
Key to developing resilience are qualities like perseverance, flexibility, optimism, and self-confidence. These traits empower children to face life’s challenges with courage and determination. By helping support the development of resilience in our kids, we are essentially equipping our children with the tools they need to overcome obstacles and thrive in an ever-changing world.
It starts with providing them with opportunities to face adversity in a safe and supportive environment. Encouraging them to tackle challenges, make mistakes, and learn from failure helps build resilience muscle. It is well researched and widely understood that play is the cornerstone for childhood development. So, it should come as no surprise that we can use every day play experiences to develop resilience in children.
Now, let’s clear something up from the start: play should always be FUN and engaging. However, it’s important to recognize that play serves a deeper purpose beyond just enjoyment for children. When you carefully select toys like CONNETIX for your child, you’re not only providing entertainment but also a valuable tool for fostering resilience.
But how exactly can parents leverage play to support resilience in their children?
During playtime, give your child the freedom to take appropriate risks and explore new activities. Whether they’re climbing a tree, constructing a fort, or attempting to build a towering structure with your magnetic tiles, allowing them to engage in such activities helps instil resilience. Encourage them to tackle challenges independently, but don’t rush to solve every problem for them.
Instead, prompt them with questions like, “I wonder what would make this tower stronger?” This approach promotes problem-solving skills and resilience, even when their play ventures don’t go as planned. Remember, it’s okay for them to seek your help if needed, but empowering them to think through solutions on their own builds resilience for future endeavours.

My four-year-old is absolutely obsessed with building towers using his CONNETIX. However, let’s be honest, not every creation is a masterpiece (but shh, don’t tell him I said that). There are moments during his play when I can see disaster looming – whether it’s the tower wavering on the brink of collapse or him precariously balancing on the armrest to add more tiles to the top. Despite the impending chaos (and likely tears we are about to see), I’ve learned to let him navigate these risky play scenarios on his own. After all, I won’t always be there to intervene and guide him.
Encourage your child to develop problem-solving skills by providing opportunities for independent exploration during playtime. Offer toys like CONNETIX, puzzles, or open-ended activities that stimulate creative thinking and require problem-solving. Resist the urge to intervene immediately when they encounter challenges, even though it may go against your parental instincts. Letting them make mistakes and find solutions on their own is crucial for their development. Remember, it’s okay if these mistakes lead to frustration – embracing failure is essential for learning.
Help your child understand that failure is a natural part of the learning process and an opportunity for growth. Instead of solely praising outcomes, focus on acknowledging their effort and perseverance. For instance, rather than saying, “Wow! I love the tower you built, it’s amazing!”, comment on the process by saying something like, “Look at this tower! I love the different CONNETIX you used at the base and the effort you put into it. And the colours you chose are so cool!” This approach encourages them to persist in the face of challenges and emphasises that the process is just as important as the final outcome.
Create a supportive environment where your child feels comfortable expressing their emotions during play. If they experience frustration or disappointment due to perceived failure, don’t dismiss their feelings. Instead, validate their emotions and offer empathy. For example, you could say, ” You’re trying to make a barn for your animals out of tiles, and it just isn’t working. I can see you’re upset that your barn didn’t turn out as you hoped. It’s okay to feel that way. Let’s think about what we can try next.” Allowing them to explore and express their emotions freely helps build emotional resilience and coping skills
Modelling is one of the best (and easiest) things you can do to encourage the development of resilience in your children. After all, they’re sponges (and even though it seems like they only absorb the accidental swear word you use, I promise they are absorbing the positives too!) Lead by example and demonstrate resilient behaviour in your own life. Show your child how you handle challenges and setbacks with optimism, perseverance, and a growth mindset. By modelling resilient behaviour, especially in play-based situations, you can provide them with valuable coping strategies they can apply in their own experiences and empower them to navigate adversity with confidence.
Perhaps you can model your feelings of frustration and problem-solving skills when your CONNETIX structure doesn’t quite go to plan. Showing your children that failure and setbacks are common. Or perhaps (as is the case in our household), you can model what happens when you run out of green tiles JUST as you need a final one to complete your masterpiece. The point is, show your children that frustration is OK, but what is most important, is how we problem solve and bounce back from the frustration.
As parents, we play a crucial role in modelling resilience through our own actions and reactions to life’s ups and downs. By demonstrating resilience in our own lives and encouraging our children to do the same, we empower them to navigate life’s twists and turns with confidence and resilience.
So, to summarise, resilience is an essential quality that allows children to navigate life’s challenges with courage and determination. Of course, as parents we hope our children never face adversity, but empowering our children with the skills they need to bounce back from setbacks, adapt to change, and problem solve, ensures they will emerge stronger from difficult situations. And what better way to do this, than through the language they understand the most; play.
